Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Discussion for Today

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:Spanish people of Syrian-Assyrian descent

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Just like with the Argentinian Assyrian category, only one person included and they are not from the country of Syria Surayeproject3 (talk) 20:03, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Energy infrastructure closed in 1964

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Procedural nomination. Sometime between the initiation and closure of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 April 22#Category:Energy infrastructure closed in 1975, the creator of those two deleted categories did start trying to expand that scheme with several other similar categories for other years -- but even though the nomination (and the sole delete vote) were both predicated mainly on the lack of categories for other years, nobody noticed the creation of these other categories in time to reevaluate their position.
To be fair, these are all still small categories for just one or two things each, and the schema is still quite scattershot (i.e. some years but not others), so it's still not a given that they're needed -- but we do have to revisit it regardless, since the original discussion hinged on the 1975 category being a standalone isolate at the time of nomination, which it wasn't anymore at time of closure.
So do we want to overturn the prior result and recreate those two categories on the grounds that the tree was expanded, or is this still unnecessary if all of the categories are still so small? Bearcat (talk) 15:58, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party politician stubs

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Underpopulated stub category, with no evidence of approval by Wikiproject Stub sorting. As always, stub categories are not free for just any user to create on a whim -- the minimum bar for the creation of a stub category is 60 articles, so stub categories have to be proposed to the Wikiproject for approval. But there are just 22 articles here, and absolutely no evidence that the creator followed the proper process.
It's worth noting that the stub template has already existed since 2020, and was filing its entries in the target Category:Bharatiya Janata Party politician stubs until being modified in the past week to use this category instead -- and while some Indian states do have their own state-level subcategories of that, they're all over the 60 bar, and many more Indian states don't have their own state-level subcategories of the parent.
To be fair, the undifferentiated {{BJP-politician-stub}} is still on enough people that I'm willing to withdraw this if somebody can find evidence that at least 38 of them can be transferred here to get it over the bar -- but 22 articles isn't enough to warrant a dedicated subcategory here. Bearcat (talk) 15:44, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Shearling (band) albums

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Band albums category created solely to hold a single redirect that doesn't even actually lead to a standalone article about the band that recorded this album, but to a subsection in an article about the predecessor band that the band members were in before forming the band that recorded this album. And further, the album was just released today, so while it may attain sufficient notability in the future to pass WP:NALBUMS, that isn't already a foregone conclusion yet as of right now.
Redirects can be categorized where appropriate and useful, but there's no rule that redirects always have to have categories on them the same way that articles do, so we don't automatically need this just because the redirect exists either.
So no prejudice against recreation in the future if and when the album or the band actually pass WP:NMUSIC, but we don't need this just to hold a single redirect to an ancestor band. Bearcat (talk) 15:31, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Stagedoor Manor alumni

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Non-defining category for alumni of a youth summer camp. As always, we categorize people by their defining characteristics, not by every possible fact about their lives -- but these people are notable as actors, singers or filmmakers, not as alumni of a youth arts training program per se. Bearcat (talk) 15:23, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Constantinos Christoforou songs

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only two known entries, both of which are redirects, making this category effectively redundant. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 10:37, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Songs with music by Levent Çoker

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only two known entries, both of which are redirects, making this category effectively redundant. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 10:35, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Edin-Ådahl songs

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only one known entry (which is itself a redirect), making this category essentially redundant. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 10:19, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Blond (band) songs

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only one known article (which is itself a redirect at present), making this category redundant. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 10:14, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Former counties of Scania

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Two articles and there are no other Former counties of (province of Sweden). The two articles may be merged to Category:History of Scania but are properly categorised in its parent Category:History of Skåne County. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 08:55, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Tourist attractions in Scania

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: The only entry here is Category:Castles in Skåne County. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 08:43, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Association of Southeast Asian Nations templates vs. Category:ASEAN templates

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: No idea which cat name should be better, but aren't both having same navigation purposes? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 08:31, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:French addiction physicians

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only 1 entry. Also merge with Category:French physicians.

Also nominating for merge:

Category:Nazi German Gulag detainees

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: narrow category at the intersection of political orientation, nationality, and prison location SMasonGarrison 03:09, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory each. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:59, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Works by Deobandis

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Corresponding to the naming format used for subcats within sibling Category:Works by writer nationality. – Fayenatic London 19:50, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, Actually, not all Deobandis are writers. Some were teachers whose teachings were later published in written form—sometimes without their knowledge. Some were muftis who issued rulings that were later compiled and published.–𝐎𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐥 𝐐𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢 ʕʘ̅͜ʘ̅ʔ 20:12, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle: Can you explain why in detail?–𝐎𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐥 𝐐𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢 ʕʘ̅͜ʘ̅ʔ 22:24, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because then it is not the work of the Deobandi. But I wonder, is this a real argument or a hypothetical argument? Does this category really contain some works that weren't written by Deobandis? Marcocapelle (talk) 22:59, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • As I mentioned in detail, not all Deobandis are writers; they belong to various domains, a point Marcocapelle acknowledged. He suggested changing the category "Books by Anwar Shah Kashmiri" to "Books about Anwar Shah Kashmiri's teachings" or "Books about Anwar Shah Kashmiri." However, I disagree with this suggestion, as such categories are misleading. Books are not always written by the author themselves; sometimes, they are compiled from oral teachings or lectures. In this case, the books were compiled by students from Anwar Shah Kashmiri's lectures, and while he didn’t write them directly, the authorship is still attributed to him through his teachings. The students are merely compilers.–𝐎𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐥 𝐐𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢 ʕʘ̅͜ʘ̅ʔ 21:23, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: I don't think that this intersection is defining. It seems to capture an extremely narrow intersection of suspects, cause of death, and the specific crime. SMasonGarrison 02:14, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Intentional communities

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Topic category names are supposed to be singular. Fractaloid (talk) 02:06, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose - I don't believe the nominating rationale is the case, or makes sense. CeltBrowne (talk) 02:16, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @CeltBrowne: WP:TOPICCAT is clear that topic categories are supposed to be singular.
This category has been tagged as such since early 2024. But this looks like a set-and-topic category. I'd remove the {{topic category}} banner and not rename, but if there is not consensus to remove the {{topic category}}, rename as nominated. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 02:57, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The nominating rationale seems to be accurate. I can’t speak to whether it makes sense or not. Fractaloid (talk) 02:54, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
